completed sign A sideAs the new signs were being designed for Helman elementary School, Sue Springer was commissioned by the school to create a ceramic sculptural mosaic for the school.  “Henry the Helman Dragon” welcomes students and teachers from both sides of the sign as they arrive and depart this school in Ashland Oregon.

“My Favorite Book”  Helman Elementary School

As part of the new school library, a small reading area was developed at Helman Elementary School just outside the new library and with a view of Mount Ashland.  An “Artist in the Schools” project was initiated by teachers to cover the benches and Susan Springer worked with the students to design tiles about their favorite books.

“The Future” Mural at Lincoln Elementary School

As part of an “Artist in the Schools”  project at Lincoln Elementary School in Ashland, Oregon,  a 1-5 blended classroom created tiles about the future.  The older students, sketched the entrance to the historic school building and created a sculptural central panel with the main school entrance and the stately columns.
In concert with the teachers, Susan Springer led discussions about expectations for life in 2005, when the 5th graders would graduate from High School. Designs were drawn and the handmade tiles were handpainted with colorful glazes and fired in the kilns at Illahe Tileworks.
